Take Your Wedding Photos To A Whole New Level With Drones

Film photography, black and white and smoke-bomb effects are all sizzling trends among wedding photographers, but topping the list of trends is the use of drones for both videography and still photography. The airborne technology gives a fresh, new vantage point to images of brides and grooms.

A drone is an unmanned aircraft. In the field of aerial photography, they're usually small, helicopter-like and operated by remote-control. Some models have built-in cameras, and you can attach a small camera to them as well. They can produce stunning, cinematic shots from above and give you an unforgettable view of your wedding. Here are some tips to consider if you're thinking of including drone photography at your wedding.

1. Drones aren't legal everywhere. Make sure it's not against the law to fly a drone in the area of your wedding venue. Drones are currently banned at all national parks, and some cities don't allow flying over private property. However, policies are in a constant state of flux, so it doesn't hurt to check with the authorities even if you think it may not be allowed.

2. Don't go nuts with it. Even if it's allowed, drones can be noisy, so plan to keep the flight time to a minimum, or film from very high altitudes. Wedding photography pros typically will try to shoot from drones while music is playing, such as during the bridal procession.  A high altitude shot of guests partying at the reception is another favorite. It's key not to let the camera drones intrude on the event.

3. Take the venue into consideration. Wide open spaces work best, like vineyards and sprawling private estates. Simple backgrounds make for better images, and congested cities can lead to liability issues. If a drone were to malfunction and fall from the sky, it could seriously injure someone. For that reason, check to make sure your drone photographer is insured.

4. Professional drone photography can range from $200 and up. Of course, the cost varies and can be included with the cost of your wedding photography package. Setting up a photo shoot via drone can be a painstaking process that requires the careful setup of the take-off area, and implementation of a few practice runs.

5. Destination weddings are a natural for aerial photography. How better to convey a sense of place than with stunning footage taken from the sky? Drones can capture expansive images of the surrounding landscape that will take you back to your wedding day for years to come.
